Downhole Logging

Wireline cables for downhole logging operations, delivering reliable power and data in high-pressure, high-temperature wells.

Where measurement quality depends on the cable

Downhole logging tools operate in some of the most demanding conditions in the energy sector. Cables see high tension from tool weight and well depth, elevated temperatures, pressure, and contact with well fluids. At the same time, logging tools must transmit continuous data and images to the surface for formation evaluation, integrity checks, and production decisions. If the cable cannot withstand the load, temperature, or duty cycle, the logging run can be cut short, resulting in lost valuable rig time.

How we engineer cables for downhole logging

Rochester Cable has supplied wireline cables to logging service providers for decades. Our designs combine mechanical strength, thermal performance, and stable electrical or optical characteristics, enabling tools to be deployed repeatedly in challenging wells.

Key design priorities

Mechanical strength and handling
Constructions designed to manage tensile loads, drum winding, sheave contact, and repeated runs in vertical and deviated wells.

High-temperature performance
Conductor insulation, fillers, and jacketing selected to withstand elevated downhole temperatures over the life of the cable.

Signal and data integrity
Single-conductor, multi-conductor, and electro-optical wireline options that support logging data, video, and tool control with stable impedance and low noise.

Application-specific variants
Alloy conductors, optical fiber elements, greaseless designs, and other options configured to match service requirements and tool designs.

Formation Evaluation

Formation evaluation logging tools measure properties such as resistivity, porosity, and lithology to characterize the reservoir. Their performance depends on clean, continuous transmission of data from the tool to surface acquisition systems.

What our cables deliver for formation evaluation:

  • Wireline constructions that support stable logging speeds and tool loads
  • Electrical and, where needed, optical paths suited for high-resolution data transmission
  • Robust insulation systems to maintain performance in high-temperature wells

Well Integrity Analysis

Well integrity logging is used to detect casing, cement, and completion issues over the life of the well. Logging cables must support multiple runs and changing conditions as the well ages.

What our cables deliver for integrity analysis:

  • Mechanical designs that tolerate repeated deployment and retrieval over the well lifecycle
  • Configurations that support a range of integrity logging tools on the same drum
  • Materials and constructions aimed at consistent measurement quality run after run

Production Logging

Production logging tools measure flow profiles and fluid behavior to help optimize production. Cable performance influences both tool conveyance and data quality.

What our cables deliver for production logging:

  • Wireline designs sized for the mechanical and electrical demands of production logging tools
  • Options for multi-element or electro-optical wireline, where additional data channels or video are required
  • Constructions intended for use in producing wells with varying temperatures and fluid environments

Completion and Intervention Support

Completion and intervention operations can require specialized tools conveyed on wireline to set equipment, perform diagnostic work, or support remedial actions. Cables must handle these operations while still providing reliable power and communication.

What our cables deliver for completion and intervention:

  • Wireline cables designed to support tool actuation, control, and status signals
  • Mechanical strength to handle varying tool strings and operational loads
  • Configurations compatible with a range of completion and intervention tool designs
