Defense Applications

Cables engineered for reliable power and signal transmission in naval and subsea defense systems.

Where reliability is non-negotiable

Defense systems at sea face constant mechanical and environmental stress. Cables are routed through tight spaces on surface ships, exposed to vibration and shock, and repeatedly deployed in saltwater at depth. Signal integrity must remain stable for sonar, surveillance, weapons systems, and recovery operations. A generic industrial cable will not survive this combination of load, movement, and electromagnetic noise.

How we engineer for naval and subsea defense

Rochester Cable has decades of experience supporting naval programs that require long-term performance under demanding conditions. Our designs combine mechanical strength, signal fidelity, and robust shielding to keep mission systems online throughout the full cable lifecycle—from launch and recovery to continuous operation.

Key design priorities

Mechanical robustness
Armored constructions to withstand tension, bending, and handling loads on deck and subsea.

Signal and data integrity
Cable designs that support high-bandwidth sonar and sensor data while minimizing attenuation and noise.

EMI and EMC performance
Shielding schemes that help protect sensitive signals from onboard and external electromagnetic interference.

Hybrid power and signal options
Copper and fiber combinations that carry power, control, and data within a single construction for compact routing.

Defense applications we support

Anti-Submarine Warfare

Anti-submarine warfare (ASW) systems rely on sonar and sensing networks that must operate quietly and continuously. Cables in these systems need to carry power, control, and high-fidelity acoustic data between shipboard processors and towed or hull-mounted arrays.

What our cables deliver for ASW:

  • Armored and torque-controlled designs that support stable towed array deployment
  • Constructions optimized for low noise and consistent impedance along the cable length
  • Options for hybrid copper and fiber to support both legacy and modern ASW architectures

Surface Ship Torpedo Defense

Surface ship torpedo defense systems depend on fast, dependable communication between sensors, launchers, and control systems. Cabling must route through congested shipboard spaces, tolerate vibration, and maintain signal quality for detection and countermeasure deployment.

What our cables deliver for torpedo defense:

  • Compact, flexible designs suited for tight routing paths and repeated handling
  • Shielding to reduce interference from onboard power systems and radio-frequency equipment
  • Configurations that support high-speed data links between sensors, combat systems, and launch equipment

Mine Countermeasures

Mine countermeasure operations use towed bodies, ROVs, and sensor packages to locate and neutralize threats in shallow and deepwater environments. These missions put significant mechanical load on the cable during towing, launch, and recovery.

What our cables deliver for mine countermeasures:

  • Rugged armor systems designed to handle tow tension, drag, and seabed contact
  • Power and control conductors sized for vehicles and sensor payloads
  • Jacket materials selected for abrasion resistance and long-term exposure to seawater

Dipping Sonar Systems

Helicopter-mounted dipping sonar uses a deployed cable to lower and raise the sonar body through the water column. That cable must carry power and data while withstanding continuous cycling, bending, and dynamic loads.

What our cables deliver for dipping sonar:

  • High-flex life constructions for repeated deployment and retrieval cycles
  • Tensile elements and armoring chosen for controlled elongation and reliable depth control
  • Signal pairs or fibers designed for stable acoustic data transmission between the sonar head and aircraft systems

Subsea and ROV Recovery Systems

Recovery and salvage operations use ROVs and specialized tools to locate, inspect, and retrieve objects from the seafloor. Cables in these systems must support both lift capability and real-time control and video.

What our cables deliver for recovery systems:

  • High-tensile armors to support lift and controlled recovery operations
  • Hybrid electro-optical constructions for power, control, and video in one cable
  • Designs developed from extensive experience with work-class ROV umbilicals and tethers.

Towed Sensor Arrays and Surveillance

Towed arrays and surveillance systems extend a ship’s sensing capability over large areas. Cables for these systems must remain stable under tow, protect sensitive signals, and operate reliably in a marine environment for long durations.

What our cables deliver for towed sensor arrays:

  • Long-length armored tow cables engineered for stable hydrodynamic behavior
  • Conductor and fiber layouts tailored for multi-channel sonar and sensing
  • Jacket systems designed for resistance to seawater, wear, and repeated deployment
